What Barry says
Nowadays there are many piano stars, Barry says, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea. Yet if you asked Chick Corea who the best piano player is, he would say Bud Powell, just as Bill Evans and Wynton Kelly would.
Barry admits that at the very beginning, for a short while, he honestly thought Chick Corea was going to be the best.
Accepting the Bruce Lundvall Visionary Award7:16
Asked about the modern jazz scene, Barry remembers Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett as youngsters who could barely play when they first came on the scene. People call them modern, but he has not heard what he would call advancement, and counts himself the most modern.
In his own words
I thought Chick Corea was going to be the best. You know, I did think that for a minute.
Everybody got a lot of piano players, they like Keith Jarrett. They like Chick Corea.
I remember when they were little kids... because I remember when they just could... barely play.

Host says Berklee puts heavy emphasis on Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea and Miles Davis.
In the interviews and notes
A forum member on a Chick Corea binge asks whether Barry’s way of learning to improvise suits fusion tunes such as ‘Spain’ and ‘La Fiesta’. One reply notes that Barry warns against getting stuck on the harmonic minor, which is rather the point in Corea’s Spanish-flavoured tunes.
