What Barry says
Barry explains how he came to join Max Roach: after Clifford Brown and Richie Powell were killed in a car crash, Harold Land, who had played with Brown, was so saddened that he went back to California. That left Max with the bassist George Morrow, and Barry, Donald Byrd and Sonny Rollins joined them.
In his own words
Harold Land, who had played with Clifford Brown, he was saddened so he went back to California. So that left Max and George Morrow, the bass player.
