What Barry says
Nowadays, Barry says, there are many piano stars, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, and people pick different ones: one says Keith Jarrett, another someone else. In his generation everyone knew who the best was, Bud Powell.
Asked about the modern jazz scene, Barry says he remembers Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett as youngsters who could barely play when they first came on the scene. People call them modern, but he has not heard what he would call advancement, and counts himself the most modern.
In his own words
Everybody got a lot of piano players, they like Keith Jarrett. They like Chick Corea.
I appreciate... Keith Jarrett for another reason, I won’t tell you
I remember when they were little kids... because I remember when they just could... barely play.
