What Barry says
Asked about Bud Powell, Barry says he did not hear him in person until much later. Around 1953 he and Doug Watkins were working with Rutherford, who said he was going to New York on holiday, so the two of them saved up to go as well.
When the time came Rutherford could not go, so Barry and Watkins went anyway. In New York they stayed with Sheila Jordan, a fellow Detroiter, and with Jeannie Dawson.
In his own words
Doug Watkins and I were working with a cat called Rudy Rutherford, and Rudy said he was going to New York for a vacation, and we said we’re going to go too.
So we saved our money, and then when the time came Rudy Rutherford couldn’t go, so we just went anyway.

In the interviews and notes
Barry explains that his first trip to New York, around 1953, grew out of a job with Rutherford: Rutherford planned a holiday there, Barry and Doug Watkins saved to join him, and when he dropped out they went on their own.
