What Barry says
Asked by Marian McPartland how his workshops began, Barry says the secret is Joe Newman and his organisation, which ran a workshop that Barry was due to teach.
On the last day of that workshop he went to off-track betting, remembered hours later that he was due at four, and arrived to find everyone still waiting. He promised to keep the class going for good if people brought enough money to pay the rent.

To Ted Panken he dates his formal teaching in New York to before the Jazz Cultural Theater, probably with Jazz Interaction, Joe and Rigmor Newman’s group, which got money for a class about once a year: once in a school on 76th or 77th Street, once at Storyville on 58th Street, where the class carried on.
In his own words
Oh, if I told you the secret to that? The secret to that is Joe Newman
It started probably with Jazz Interaction, which was Joe and Rigmor Newman’s group. They’d get money to have a class about once a year.

In the interviews and notes
Barry tells Ted Panken that his formal teaching in New York began before the Jazz Cultural Theater, probably with Jazz Interaction, run by Joe and Rigmor Newman, which had money for a class about once a year; the class that lasted grew out of their sessions at Storyville.
In Panken’s account, Barry’s formal teaching dates from the mid-1970s, for the non-profit Jazz Interactions led by Joe and Rigmor Newman; demand for those classes eventually led him to set up his own school, the Jazz Cultural Theater on Eighth Avenue.
JazzTimes credits an episode at Joe Newman’s Jazz Interaction programme with making Barry commit to teaching: muddled about the time, he was at off-track betting and reached the class almost two hours late, yet everyone was still there. Barry says he decided then to keep teaching.
