Johnny Mandel was an American composer and arranger who wrote the ballad A Time for Love; Barry names him on Piano Jazz in 2002 as he chooses that song for a solo, and he played it in his own concerts.

What Barry says
Asked by Marian McPartland on Piano Jazz for another pretty solo, Barry seizes on her words ‘it’s time’ and chooses A Time for Love, naming Johnny Mandel, a little tentatively, as its writer.

After he plays it, it is praised as one of the prettiest tunes, and Barry appears to say it is not all that new but one he only took up within roughly the last ten years. The captions do not separate the speakers clearly here.
He also played the song in concert. At the North Sea festival in 2005 he offered a little of A Time for Love together with I’ll Keep Loving You, saying some people might like it, and in Rennes he told the audience he had slipped it in without planning to.

In the interviews and notes
Marijt wrote out Barry’s solo version of Mandel’s A Time For Love from Live in Rennes, a 2009 trio album with Mathias Allamane and Philippe Soirat. Since he takes the theme rubato, she dropped some rolls and ornaments to make his harmony easier to follow.

In her analysis Barry keeps borrowing notes from diminished chords: an F sharp from the F sharp diminished that goes with G minor 6, a G minor voicing with no third, a bar alternating G minor and F sharp diminished for tension and release, and an eleventh on E half-diminished.

In her own arrangement Marijt puts an eleventh on a half-diminished chord, borrowing it from the diminished chord that goes with the minor 6 chord a minor third higher, and notes that Barry does this in A Time For Love.
A forum member in the thread on the Barry Harris study group writes out the changes of A Time For Love, proposes one of Barry’s sixth-diminished block-chord scales for each bar, and asks for help with the bars he is unsure of.
