What Barry says
Barry tells Marian he only settled in New York around 1960, much later than she assumed and long after she arrived. He says he sometimes wishes he had come then, because he missed hearing her and others, and that he wishes he had been born a little earlier or a little later.
When it is Marian’s turn to play alone, Barry asks for In the Blue of Evening because he needs to learn it. Afterwards he owns up to the selfish reason: hearing her brought the bridge back to him, and he promises to greet her with the tune when she walks into a club where he is playing.
In his own words
there was [a] very selfish reason... I wanted you to play that song because I was trying to learn that song... when you walk into the club where I’m playing, I will greet you with that song.
Sometimes I wish that I had come to New York then, you know, because I missed out on a lot of hearing you and other people.
