Tunes he taught

Like Someone in Love

Barry played Like Someone in Love often with his trio, and in teaching he named it as a song where one of his key movements happens: a major chord, to its relative minor, to that minor with the sixth in the bass. The workbook to his first workshop video applies that movement to the tune.

What he teaches through it

In a Hague lesson he called it one movement you really should know: a major chord goes to its relative minor, then to that minor with the sixth in the bass, which is a half-diminished chord. He said you find it in a lot of songs, and named Like Someone in Love first, then I Love You and Stella by Starlight.

He sang a phrase of the tune to point out that the same move comes back in a later part of it. Working the move on Stella in the same lesson, he said some players go straight to the minor with the sixth in the bass, but he goes to the plain minor first.

The workbook to his first workshop video has a section called ‘Major – Minor – Minor/6’ in its chapter on movable chords for piano and guitar, applied to Stella by Starlight, Like Someone in Love and I Remember You.

At his 2008 clinic in Spain, in a clip whose description names this tune and Just One of Those Things, he told the players the music is not exact and the main thing is to groove: the bass player only began to sound like a real bass player once he patted his foot and kept the tempo.

In his own words

There’s one movement you really should know. That’s major to relative minor, to minor with the six [in] the bass. You find that in a lot of songs. If you were to play Like Someone In Love.
