Tunes he taught

Misty

Barry used Misty in a Hague ensemble class to teach singers to come in on the ‘and’, stopping along the way to fix the pianist’s chords.

What he teaches through it

A singer should be able to come in on an ‘and’ while the bass plays four beats. Barry set this up on Misty, counting the band in and placing the singer’s first entry on the ‘and’ of four.

Feeling the ‘and’3:304:42

Coming in later still, he said, is even hipper, and he counted further into the bar before bringing the phrase in.

Feeling the ‘and’5:20

He had all the singers sing the bridge feeling the ‘ands’, made sure one student had really felt them, and caught himself slipping into quarter-note triplets when he meant to sing the ‘ands’.

Feeling the ‘and’7:057:418:16

He corrected the pianist’s chords along the way. The C7 needed something in it, and he named F♯, E natural or D♭; later he asked for an A7 with B♭ and E♭ added.

Feeling the ‘and’4:045:56

Where a D minor came he wanted a plain D minor, and asked why players always reach for what he called ‘that augmented nine’. Just before Misty he had said his school would learn simple chords, without the extra notes players crowd onto minor sevenths.
