Philly Joe Jones
drums
Philly Joe Jones was a hard-bop drummer; Barry calls him a very dear friend, but in class uses ‘that Philly Joe thing’, a lone accent on beat four, as the drum figure he cannot stand.

What Barry says
Stopping a class band, Barry says the one phrase he hates is the drummer’s ‘Philly Joe thing’ on the fourth beat. He detests it on its own, but will go along if the drummer also plays the ‘and’ of two before the four, which he calls salsa.
Barry says Philly Joe had a ball with that figure and was a very dear friend. In a comic aside he claims his psychiatrist told him to stay away from Philly Joe because of it, so he could not even go to hear him play.
In his own words
There is one phrase I hate, and that’s what the drummer is doing. That Philly Joe thing on the fourth beat. I detest it.
please don’t give me just that four. I know Philly Joe had a ball with it. He was a very dear friend of mine.
